TEAMWORK

"Talent wins games, but Defense, Teamwork and Intelligence win championships."

People tend to glamorize individual levels of success without taking the entire process into consideration. We have very powerful hitters on our team. These hitters are recognized as exceptional hitters by many people. We know that we have very powerful, exceptional hitters because we also have great team passing and setters who are able to take the passes and set the ball in such a way that the hitters can make the kill.

Defense, Teamwork and Intelligence are the difference between any team's wins and losses. Coaches have to find a way to utilize each player's talents for the best interests of the team. The players must understand their role and be willing to sacrifice their own personal interests for the success of the team.

This does not mean you have to passively submit yourself to a coach's decision. What it does mean is that you should find out your strengths and weaknesses and understand your specific role at that time. Your ability to get more playing time is determined by how over qualified you are for your present position.

Becoming a championship team is a selfless process. Sometimes we can ignore or fail to respect all the parts that make a team successful. Within any group of people that compose a team, there will be some high and low moments. Especially when there are many players trying to demonstrate a high level of skill and tactics. However, once a game begins, everyone must be in agreement concerning their role on the team. When a pressure situation occurs, all players and substitutes know what the other players are capable of accomplishing. Everyone plays as a cohesive unit.

There are many teams with great players that never win championships. There are many teams with average talent that win championships. The difference lies within those players who are willing to sacrifice for the greater good of the team. If you think and achieve as a team, the individual goals will also be accomplished.

"I don't think anything is unrealistic if you believe you can do it. I think if you are determined enough and willing to pay the price, you can get it done" - Mike Ditka

"You're not finished when you are defeated...you're finished when you quit." - Van Crouch
